Like we state on our about page, we really want to give more love to the Loin and the Tendernob; our hoods. And normally, posts about, “Oh wow, here’s a list of what people searched for to get to my site” are pretty lame. Despite that fact, I just wanted to share this one as it is telling of the reason we’re writing this blog:
yelp sutter and joes is it safe?
There really is a lot of prejudice against all things near the Loin. I have no idea what Yelp has to do with safety, but I imagine that the person who typed this meant, “jones” and not “joes”. Sutter and Jones happens to be a very nice corner and very safe. I even envy it whenever I’m there as Candy Darling is on one corner for all your sweet tooth needs and Cafe Bean on the other with their tasty dutch pancakes and minimal outdoor seating. Then there’s this swanky building called the Belgravia.
I also need to mention that at that corner, the 2, 3, 4, and 27 lines all have a stop. That my friends is effin’ convenient transportation connections.
But if all that isn’t enough to convince you about the safety of this intersection, then rest assured that there are cadres of kids with funky hair cuts from the AoA smoking in front of the two dorms on Sutter St. throughout the night. And if gentle-hearted art students can smoke outside whenever they want, then that is a mighty safe area you’re looking at.

There is a lot to like about our neighborhood and it is great that Tenderblog shines a light on the positive. However, we need to be realistic about the Loin as well. Bad stuff happens here and out right ignoring that fact won’t provide a full picture of our hood. We love the TL pimples and all.
True, but asking if Sutter and Jones is safe, is about like asking if California and Mason is safe. If it were Turk and Leavenworth, then the question would be more valid. Our issue is more with the exaggeration about how dangerous the Loin is.
I hear that. IMO the Loin is the only part of town that really feels like other big cities (Chicago, NYC, etc) Beautiful and gritty.
A friend was in town, staying at the Metropolis on Taylor at Market. She’s a city-girl from DC, so she was fine, despite the semi-gritty location. But her sis from the ‘burbs was in town one evening. They needed to know how to get from our place at Post & Jones back to the hotel, and we told them just walk down to Taylor, turn right and there you are…
Her sis wondered if it was safe… To which we responded, “It’s totally fine – just be sure to run for the last two blocks.” The look on her face was priceless…
Hah, great story, Eric. It also raises the two most important (in my opinion) factors in determining how well you and the TL will get along: your gender and your street smarts. Chicks obviously have to deal with a different kind of harassment than guys. And if you know how to avoid trouble based on prior urban experience you’re probably fine. I roll my eyes too when people ask if it’s “safe” but I have to remember I’ve lived in some challenging cities and know how to deal with it.
I have visions of living in Belgravia.
